The Bali Aga of Tenganan Five kilometres north of the tourist resort of Candi Dasa, lies the Bali Aga village of Tenganan. The orginal inhabitants of Bali, the Bali Aga believe they are descendants from Gods. It was during the decline of the Majapahit Empire in East Java and the subsequent influx of immigrants from Java to Bali. Tenganan has embraced tourism albeit in a restricted manner. There was a strangeness about this ancient village. Most of the buildings were unkempt and had a loneliness in their ageing silence. The cobbled, tiered wide streets (built in this manner to avoid flooding) bore the wear and weight of time, and the pats of cattle dung gave notice of some village activity. At the northern end of the village, where the only water source existed Several women, bare-breasted and clad only in sarongs, drew water from the well as fat cattle looked on in amusement whilst they flicked the flies from their bodies and wallowed in the cool mud. Chickens, their feathers dyed a multitude of colours for the amusement of the village children, scratched hopelessly in the dry and dusty dirt. Candi Dasa Located on the northeastern coast of Bali, is the small village of Candidasa.
